The University of Ottawa is a public research university which was first established in 1848 and enrolled over 40,000 students by 2012. In 2013, it ranked 2nd most sustainable university in Canada, and among the top 15 in the world. The university has a centralized chilled water production network which is used to supply 27 of its buildings. This system operates 24 hours a day all year round.

Energy Efficiency Measures

New configuration of the chilled water production network ;

Installation of variable frequency drives & valves to moderate fan speed of cooling towers & pumps ;

Addition of control points for system coordination ;

Implementation of new control sequences for chiller & pump operation.

Project Benefits

Before the proposed optimization was realized by SMi Enerpro, the peak load of summer 2008 was 4200 tons whereas the winter minimum load was 300 tons. The annual production was of 8.4 million ton-hours. This energy efficiency project in the central cooling plant has had several advantages to the University of Ottawa. It resulted in energy savings of approximately $200,000 that represent 38% of the total annual energy bill. In addition, the implementation of the new system has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 521 tons.
